Germany had already reached a second consecutive final after overcoming Argentina in the semi-finals and completed their impressive campaign by edging out a spirited Spanish side.
Spain pushed the defending champions all the way and capped a remarkable tournament run with a silver medal, having earlier booked their place in the final after a dramatic victory over the Netherlands. But Germany’s experience and resilience once again proved decisive on the biggest stage.
Earlier in the day, Argentina claimed bronze by defeating the Netherlands, completing the podium alongside champions Germany and runners-up Spain.
