History has been made in Belgium and the Netherlands as the inaugural FIH Para Hockey World Cup came to a close on 24 August. Italy were crowned the first-ever world champions after a thrilling 5-4 victory over Spain in the final. England and Pakistan claimed the Challenger Trophies, both finishing in ninth place.
From 20 to 24 August, athletes with intellectual disabilities from around the world competed in mixed-gender 6-a-side teams, showcasing their talent, determination and passion on the international stage. The tournament featured 16 teams and marked the first time Para Hockey athletes had the opportunity to compete for an official world title.
Matches were played at Myra Hockey Club in Amstelveen and Louvain-la-Neuve Hockey Club before the competition reached its conclusion at the Wagener Stadium and the Belfius Hockey Arena in Wavre, both venues of the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026.
Beyond the results, the tournament stood as a celebration of inclusion, diversity, friendship and respect. Throughout five unforgettable days, athletes demonstrated exceptional sportsmanship and forged connections that extended far beyond the hockey pitch.
The inaugural FIH Para Hockey World Cup was much more than a competition. It marked the beginning of a new chapter for inclusive hockey and leaves behind a legacy of courage, pride and inspiration for future generations.
